San José de las Matas.– Con la presencia del presidente ejecutivo del Grupo Popular, señor Manuel E. Jiménez F., empleados voluntarios de la organización financiera sembraron un total de 1,500 árboles en terrenos del Plan Sierra, en la localidad de los Montones Arriba, municipio de San José de las Matas, provincia Santiago.
Estas plantas contribuirán a mantener los afluentes de agua que nutren al río Yaque del Norte, específicamente la microcuenca Inoa y la subcuenca Amina. Una vez alcancen su etapa adulta, los árboles sembrados podrán capturar 480 toneladas de CO2, retener 180,000 kilogramos de suelo y almacenar 4.5 millones de litros de agua anualmente.
Entre las variedades de matas sembradas en esta primera jornada del año 2021 se encuentran las de pino caribaea y occidentalis, mara, gabirma y guázara.
En sus palabras de motivación a los asistentes a la jornada de reforestación, el señor Manuel E. Jiménez F., indicó que estas siembras forman parte de la cultura y de los valores que definen a la marca Popular, entre ellos el trabajo en equipo, el respeto por la naturaleza y la integridad.
“Participar colectivamente como Grupo Popular en esta reforestación significa sumar un hito al esfuerzo de miles de compañeros, que por años han ayudado a recobrar la masa forestal de esta zona, un pulmón verde de extraordinaria importancia para la supervivencia de nuestra isla”, precisó el presidente ejecutivo.

El Grupo Popular, a través de sus distintas filiales, realiza estas actividades de reforestación desde hace 22 años en el Plan Sierra y en otros puntos del país, un ejercicio que le permite reducir la huella de carbono producto de su actividad comercial, hasta convertirse en una organización carbono neutral certificada internacionalmente.
De esta forma, la organización cumple su compromiso con la sostenibilidad ambiental del país y su adhesión a los Principios de Banca Responsable de las Naciones Unidas.
